Our story

BarkUp began withTurbo.

Our loving, super-smart dapple dachshund showed us how easily a cautious dog can be judged from one nervous moment-and how much the right friendship can mean.

The dachshund behind BarkUp

A small dog with a big world to navigate.

Turbo is our two-year-old black and grey dapple tweenie dachshund. When he was little, he was incredibly shy. Around other dogs he would often make himself small and behave submissively, choosing to give way rather than make a fuss.

To us, he is also the most loving and super-smart puppy. He adores being outdoors: hiking up mountains, exploring woodland trails and charging through streams as if every splash is a brand-new discovery. Give him an adventure and the people he trusts, and his confidence and enormous personality shine through.

As he grew older, some of that uncertainty turned into fear and reactivity. New dogs and fast approaches can feel like a lot to process, and his first response does not always show the gentle, funny and affectionate dog we know at home.

Understandably, people often give a reactive dog a wide berth. But for Turbo, being judged from a distance means he rarely gets the time or space to become comfortable. It can close the door before he has had a fair chance to show who he is.

We know that another version of Turbo exists. He still has a few doggy friends from puppyhood who make him feel safe, and he usually gets on well with dogs around his own size. With familiar company and a thoughtful introduction, he can relax, play and simply enjoy being a dog.

“Turbo does not need every dog to be his friend. He just deserves a fair chance to find the right ones.”
When comfort comes first

There is so much more beyond the first bark.

Woodland paths, rushing streams and mountain climbs are where Turbo is happiest. He reminds us that confidence is not the same as comfort: a little context, patience and the right walking companion can give a cautious dog room to show their real personality.

Why we are building BarkUp

We want Turbo-and dogs like him-to have a life filled with the right friends, not judgement from a distance.

BarkUp began as a way to help our own puppy find patient, compatible walking companions. We are building it for every owner who has wished people could see the lovely dog beyond a nervous first impression.

What Turbo taught us

Three principles for the long walk.

Features will change as BarkUp learns, but Turbo’s experience will keep these principles visible in every important product choice.

01

Look beyond the first moment

A worried reaction does not tell a dog’s whole story. BarkUp gives owners room to share what helps their dog feel settled before a meeting.

02

Make room for comfort

The right size, pace and introduction can change everything. Compatibility matters more than collecting as many connections as possible.

03

Lead back to real life

The best outcome is not more screen time. It is a calm hello, a good route and familiar company that both dogs can learn to enjoy.

Building in public, carefully

One dog started it. A community can shape it.

Turbo gave us the reason to begin. Now we want to listen to owners of shy, selective, reactive and simply misunderstood dogs so BarkUp solves the real problems that come with finding suitable local company.

We will not pretend an app can remove every risk or make every pair compatible. Better context, safer defaults and kinder expectations can, however, improve the odds of a good first walk-and perhaps a lasting friendship.
